Why isn't Tax Day always April 15?
When April 15 falls on a Saturday, Sunday or a legal holiday, the deadline moves to the next business day. Emancipation Day, a DC holiday on April 16 (or the nearest weekday), counts as a legal holiday for the IRS.
What if I file an extension?
You get until October 15 to file, but any tax owed is still due on Tax Day. Interest and penalties run from then.
Are state deadlines the same?
Most states match the federal date, but not all. Check your state's revenue department.
