The 31 January deadline covers the online return for the tax year that ended the previous 5 April, the balancing payment for that year, and the first payment on account for the current one. Miss it and HMRC charges an automatic £100 penalty, even if you owe nothing.

The paper return deadline is earlier, 31 October. If it is your first return, registering for Self Assessment and getting the activation code takes weeks, so the useful reminder is in the autumn.

What happens if I miss 31 January?
A fixed £100 penalty straight away, then daily penalties after three months, plus interest on any unpaid tax.
Can I pay in instalments?
HMRC's Time to Pay lets you spread a bill under £30,000 over up to 12 months if you set it up online within 60 days of the deadline.
When is the paper deadline?
31 October, three months earlier than the online one.
