Is Black Friday the same date in the UK?

Yes. UK retailers use the US date, the Friday after US Thanksgiving, even though Thanksgiving itself is not observed in the UK.

Do the deals start before the day?

Usually. Most large retailers open their Black Friday pricing a few days to a week early, and many keep it running through Cyber Monday.

Is Black Friday a public holiday?

No, not in the US or the UK. Many Americans have the day off because of Thanksgiving, but it is a normal working day elsewhere.

Black Friday is the day after US Thanksgiving, so it is always the fourth Friday of November.

Black Friday started as the US kick-off to holiday shopping and is now a global sales day, with the UK and most of Europe running the same deals. Many retailers now start a week early and run through Cyber Monday.

The useful reminder is not "Black Friday is today". It is the one a week before that says: write down the two things you actually need, and the price they are today, so you can tell a real discount from a repriced one.
