The best break reminder apps for getting away from the screen

The best break reminder app is the one whose interruption is strong enough to make you stop, but not so irritating that you disable it by lunch. Stretchly is the best free cross-platform desktop choice. Workrave is better when you want enforced breaks and activity-aware timing. Time Out is the most configurable option for Mac. BreakTimer keeps the setup simpler. Pokobot is useful when the reminder needs to follow you away from the computer through WhatsApp.

We build Pokobot and its free browser break timer, so this is not an independent ranking. We checked each product's first-party documentation on 29 September 2026 and name the tradeoff for every option. Prices and platform support can change, so the official links are included beside each recommendation.

The short answer

Choose Stretchly if you want a capable free break timer app on Windows, macOS or Linux. It handles short and long breaks, notices idle time and can pause while your computer is in Do Not Disturb mode. Choose Workrave if you keep dismissing gentle notifications and need the option to block keyboard and mouse input during a break.

On a Mac, Time Out offers the deepest scheduling and presentation controls. BreakTimer is the easier cross-platform alternative when you mainly want working hours, a warning and simple skip or snooze controls. Use Pokobot when a desktop-only interruption is not enough, or when you move between a laptop, phone and other rooms during the day.

1. Stretchly: best free break timer app for most computers

Stretchly lives in the system tray and periodically opens a break window with an idea for what to do. It supports both frequent mini breaks and longer breaks, and its preferences let you change the timing, wording, appearance and strictness. Official installers are available for Windows, macOS and Linux.

Its most useful detail is that the schedule is aware of context. Stretchly monitors idle time, so walking away from the computer can count as the break instead of returning to an immediate popup. It can also pause breaks while Do Not Disturb is active. That makes it a good default for people who want structure without having to manage the timer all day.

The limitation is the same as its strength: it is desktop software. It works while the app is running on that computer. It does not naturally follow you to a phone or deliver the interruption through a chat you already check.

2. Workrave: best when you keep skipping breaks

Workrave separates the day into microbreaks, longer rest breaks and a daily computer-use limit. Its timers distinguish active keyboard or mouse use from idle time. If you step away, the idle period can satisfy the break rather than leaving the next one waiting for your return.

It can stay gentle, but it also has teeth. Depending on your settings, Workrave can remove the postpone and skip buttons or block keyboard and mouse input during the break. It can show exercises during longer rests and track break compliance and computer use. That makes it the strongest choice here for someone who has learned to dismiss ordinary notifications automatically.

Workrave is most at home on Windows and Linux, and the interface is designed around control rather than visual polish. If a pleasant, nearly invisible timer is more likely to remain installed, Stretchly or BreakTimer will probably fit better.

3. Time Out: best screen break app for Mac

Time Out can run several break schedules, including frequent micro pauses and longer normal breaks. When a break starts it can dim the display, show a progress panel, play a sound or run an action. You decide whether postpone and skip buttons remain visible, which is useful if the button itself has become the habit.

The scheduling is unusually deep. A break can repeat from the last due time, the last completed time or a fixed point in the hour. Time Out understands natural idle breaks, can limit schedules to working hours and can delay a break briefly while you finish a mouse drag. Supporter features add more schedules, actions, availability windows and themes.

It is a Mac product, and its flexibility means more settings than most people need. Pick it when you want precise control over how a break takes over the screen. Pick BreakTimer when you want to install something, choose an interval and move on.

4. BreakTimer: best simple cross-platform schedule

BreakTimer is a free, open-source desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux. You set how often a break appears, how long it lasts and which working hours should contain it. A notification warns you before the interruption, and you can skip or snooze when the timing is genuinely bad.

It has fewer concepts to learn than Workrave and less schedule depth than Time Out. That is the reason to choose it. The app covers the practical middle: proper desktop delivery, a workday boundary and enough customization to make the message readable without turning break planning into another project.

Windows downloads are currently unsigned, so Windows may show a warning before installation. The project also says it does not offer enterprise support or deployment guarantees. Those are reasonable tradeoffs for a free personal tool, but they matter in a managed workplace.

5. Pokobot: best when the break should reach WhatsApp

Pokobot approaches the problem from two directions. The free browser break timer runs Pomodoro 25/5, deep-work 50/10, a 20-minute eye-break pattern or a custom interval. It can chime and request a desktop notification while the page is open. There is no sign-up, and the timer stays in the browser.

For a schedule that must survive a closed tab, send the same instruction to Pokobot on WhatsApp. A message such as β€œremind me to stretch every 45 minutes between 9am and 6pm on weekdays” creates a repeating reminder with a daily boundary. The reminder follows the phone rather than depending on one computer.

We build it, so the limitation is worth stating plainly. Pokobot does not watch keyboard or mouse activity. It cannot tell that you already walked away, and it cannot lock the screen. Use Workrave or Stretchly if activity detection is the feature that makes the schedule credible. Use WhatsApp when location and continuity matter more.

How to choose a time break app you will keep using

Start with delivery strength. A small notification works if you only need a nudge. A dimmed or blocked screen is better if you routinely continue typing through the alert. A WhatsApp message is useful if you change devices or leave the desk. Do not choose the strictest app by default. Choose the weakest interruption that still changes what you do.

Then check whether idle time counts. Activity-aware apps avoid the annoying case where you return from making tea and immediately get told to take a break. Finally, define working hours. A break reminder that speaks during dinner or sleep will be muted, and a muted reminder system is no system at all.

Test one interval for a week before adding more. If every break is skipped, change the delivery or reduce the frequency. If the app is disabled entirely, the schedule was too aggressive. The useful measure is not how many alerts fired. It is whether the setup remains active and occasionally gets you out of the chair.

Questions, answered

What is the best break timer app?
Stretchly is the best free cross-platform desktop choice for most people. Workrave is better for activity-aware or enforced breaks, Time Out offers the deepest Mac controls, BreakTimer keeps desktop setup simple, and Pokobot is useful when the reminder should arrive through WhatsApp.
Is there a free screen break app?
Yes. Stretchly, Workrave and BreakTimer are free and open source. Pokobot also has a free browser break timer with no sign-up. Time Out can be used for free on Mac, while some advanced controls are supporter features.
Can a break reminder detect when I already left the computer?
Some desktop apps can. Stretchly and Workrave monitor idle time so a natural pause can count toward the schedule. A browser timer or WhatsApp reminder cannot reliably observe keyboard and mouse activity after you leave the page or device.
What is the difference between a break timer and a Pomodoro timer?
A Pomodoro timer alternates deliberate work and rest sessions, commonly 25 minutes and 5 minutes. A break reminder can run more quietly in the background, count only active computer use and prompt shorter screen or movement breaks without treating the day as a series of focus sessions.
Can WhatsApp remind me to take screen breaks?
Yes. Pokobot can send a repeating WhatsApp reminder such as β€œstretch every 45 minutes between 9am and 6pm on weekdays.” It follows you across devices, but it cannot detect idle time or enforce a break the way desktop software can.
