The best birth control reminder apps for the pill, patch, ring and shot

Spot On, from Planned Parenthood Direct, is the best birth control reminder app for most people: it is free, works on iPhone and Android, and handles the pill, patch, ring, shot, implant and IUD with discreet reminders. Pokobot is our second pick for a daily pill if you live in WhatsApp, because the reminder arrives as a message worded however you like. myPill is the best pill-pack app on iPhone, Lady Pill Reminder is a simple option on Android, Apple Health is built into iPhone, and Clue suits people who also track their cycle.

A birth control reminder has more to handle than a general medication alarm. Some pill packs include a break week, progestin-only pills usually need to be taken within the same 3-hour window each day, a patch changes weekly for three weeks, a ring stays in for three weeks, and the shot is due about every 3 months. The right app understands your method's schedule.

This guide is general information, not medical advice. Follow your clinician's instructions and the leaflet for your method. Pokobot publishes this guide and ranks itself second; Spot On remains first for most people. We checked guidance from the CDC, the NHS and Planned Parenthood, official app pages and US App Store listings on 7 October 2026, and did not accept payment for inclusion.

What your birth control reminder needs to handle

Start with your method, because it decides what kind of reminder works. These are the usual schedules; your clinician may prescribe a different pattern, such as running packs back to back, so follow their instructions.

How to choose a birth control reminder app

Most people only need two or three of these features. Decide which matter for your method, then pick the simplest app that has them.

  1. Does it support your method?

Pill-only apps won't help with a patch, ring or shot. If you might switch methods, an app that covers all of them, such as Spot On, saves you starting again.

  2. Does it understand break weeks?

With a 21-day pill pack, patch or ring, a plain daily alarm keeps going off during your break. Pack-aware apps pause and restart on the right day.

  3. Will it follow up if you miss it?

A single notification is easy to swipe away. Look for repeat alerts until you mark the pill taken, especially with a progestin-only pill's narrow window.

  4. Can the reminder be discreet?

Check whether you can change the reminder text so it doesn't mention birth control, and whether previews can be hidden on your lock screen.

  5. How does it handle your data?

Cycle and contraception data is sensitive. Read the privacy policy, check whether data is shared with partners, and find out how to delete your account.

1. Spot On: best birth control reminder app overall

Spot On is a period and birth control tracker from Planned Parenthood Direct. You choose your method, whether that is the pill, patch, ring, shot, implant or IUD, and set discreet reminders that match its schedule. It also tracks your period, symptoms and activities, and if you aren't using hormonal birth control, it predicts your next period.

It is free on iPhone and Android, and it connects you to a chat or text line with health educators if you have questions. On the US App Store it was rated 4.2 from more than 15,000 ratings, and it was last updated in February 2026.

Choose Spot On if you want one trustworthy app that knows how every method works. If you only want a simple pill alarm, a lighter app may feel quicker.

2. Pokobot: best for a daily pill reminder in WhatsApp

Pokobot sends your reminder as a WhatsApp message at the same time every day. You word it however you like, so “every day at 9pm remind me to take my evening pill” or something only you understand both work. A daily check-in can ask at that time with Completed, Remind in 30 min and Not completed buttons, which helps when a pill has to be taken within a short window.

It ranks second because a WhatsApp message is hard to miss for people who check the app constantly, and it needs no new app. It suits pills you take every day without a break, such as 28-day packs and most progestin-only pills.

Know its limits. Pokobot doesn't understand pill packs or break weeks, so with a 21-day pack, patch or ring a daily or weekly reminder would keep arriving during your break; use a pack-aware app instead, or set one-off reminders for each change. Repeats are daily, weekly or monthly, not every 13 weeks, so for the shot, set a one-off reminder after each appointment. WhatsApp shows message previews unless you turn them off. Every feature is free for 7 days with no card required, then a paid subscription.

3. myPill: best for pill packs on iPhone

myPill is built around birth control packs. It knows when you are on a break and when to remind you again, and it can keep reminding you until you mark the pill as taken. It supports the ring and patch as well as the pill, and its planner can remind you to buy new packs or book a checkup. You can also take notes, track symptoms and see period predictions.

The core app is free, with optional premium upgrades, including a lifetime option, on the US App Store. It runs on iPhone, iPad and Mac, where it was rated 4.8 from about 6,500 ratings. Choose it if you use an iPhone and take a pill with a break week.

4. Lady Pill Reminder: best simple option for Android

Lady Pill Reminder keeps things simple. You enter how many pills are in your pack and the time you take them, and it reminds you each day. Reminders switch off automatically on days you don't take a pill, so the break week stays quiet, and you can choose the notification sound and vibration.

It is free to download on Google Play. Choose it if you use Android and want a reminder that understands pill packs without extra tracking. For a patch, ring or shot, Spot On covers more methods.

5. Apple Health: best built-in option on iPhone

The Medications feature in Apple's Health app can remind you to take a pill without another app. From iOS 18, you can set a cyclical schedule, such as 21 days on and 7 days off, so reminders pause during the break. Follow-up reminders alert you again if you haven't logged it 30 minutes later, and Critical Alerts can sound even when your phone is muted or a Focus is on.

It is free on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, but it is a general medication tool rather than a birth control app, so it doesn't track patches, rings or shots in the same way. Choose it if you take a pill and prefer to keep everything in Apple's own apps.

6. Clue: best if you also track your cycle

Clue is a detailed period and cycle tracker that lets you log your birth control method, including the pill, IUD, ring and patch, and track symptoms even when your bleeding is irregular. Its reminders include one for taking your pill, and you can change the schedule, time and message text so it stays discreet.

The tracker is free, and Clue Plus was listed at $9.99 a month or $39.99 a year on the US App Store. Clue is based in Berlin and says your data is protected by European privacy law. Choose it if you want deep cycle insights and a pill reminder in one app.

If you take a pill late or miss one

Instructions depend on the type of pill and how late you are, so check the leaflet that came with it, or ask a pharmacist, doctor or nurse. As a general guide, CDC guidance treats a combined pill taken less than 24 hours late as late, and one 24 hours or more late as missed. Missing two or more in a row usually means using condoms or avoiding sex until you have taken active pills for 7 days in a row, and emergency contraception may be worth considering.

Progestin-only pills have a narrower window. Planned Parenthood says that if you take one more than 3 hours past your usual time, you should use a backup method such as condoms for the next 48 hours; Slynd is an exception that doesn't need the 3-hour window. For a late patch or ring change, follow the instructions for your product.

How to keep birth control reminders discreet

Lock-screen notifications can be seen by anyone nearby. A few settings keep your reminder private.

  1. Change the wording

Most apps here let you edit the reminder text. “Evening pill”, “daily vitamin” or a word only you recognize works as well as “birth control”.

  2. Hide previews on your lock screen

On iPhone, go to Settings, then Notifications, and set Show Previews to When Unlocked. On Android, look for an option to hide sensitive notification content on the lock screen.

  3. Turn off message previews in WhatsApp

If you use a WhatsApp reminder, turn off message previews in WhatsApp's notification settings so only a new-message alert appears.

  4. Pick a neutral sound

Use your phone's normal notification sound, or a gentle vibration, so the alert doesn't draw attention.

Reminders for the patch, ring and shot

For the patch and ring, the change day matters more than the time. Pick a change day you'll remember, such as Sunday evening, and use an app that skips the break week, or set one-off reminders for each change if your app can't.

For the shot, the CDC says the next injection is usually due every 13 weeks, and can be given up to 2 weeks late without needing backup contraception. Set a reminder a week or two before it's due so you have time to book, and book the next appointment before you leave the clinic.
