# Days until Tax Day 2027

> How many days until the US tax filing deadline 2027? Countdown to Tax Day, why the date moves, and WhatsApp reminders to gather documents and file or extend in time.

It falls on Thursday, April 15, 2027. Federal returns are due April 15, or the next business day when the 15th falls on a weekend or on Emancipation Day in Washington, DC.

Tax Day is the deadline to file your federal income tax return or request an extension. In 2027 it is Thursday, April 15. In 2028, April 15 is a Saturday and Monday the 17th is Emancipation Day in DC, so the deadline moves to Tuesday, April 18.
An extension gives you until October 15 to file, but not to pay. What people actually miss is the paperwork: W-2s and 1099s arrive by early February, and the return stalls waiting for one document.

## Questions, answered

**Why isn't Tax Day always April 15?** When April 15 falls on a Saturday, Sunday or a legal holiday, the deadline moves to the next business day. Emancipation Day, a DC holiday on April 16 (or the nearest weekday), counts as a legal holiday for the IRS.

**What if I file an extension?** You get until October 15 to file, but any tax owed is still due on Tax Day. Interest and penalties run from then.

**Are state deadlines the same?** Most states match the federal date, but not all. Check your state's revenue department.

**How do the reminders work?** Each Remind me button opens WhatsApp with one message already typed for Poko, dated for this year's occurrence. You press Send, Poko confirms the date, and the message arrives on WhatsApp when it is due. Nothing is sent by this page.
